Why a Bear?

The inspiration behind the Bear sculpture design.

8 October 2025

Home > Charity

The inspiration behind the Bear design features an adult bear with a cub—symbolising strength, wisdom, and nurturing care.

Bears have long represented protection and resilience, making them a powerful metaphor for the role YMCA Tayside plays in supporting young people. This imagery beautifully reflects our youth work ethos: guiding, safeguarding, and empowering the next generation. The bear also connects to YMCA’s global movement, with many partner countries—like Canada, host of next year’s World Alliance—sharing this iconic symbol in their natural heritage.
